Water Near Water Street

This work uses satellite imagery to focus attention on the diversity and importance of waterways around the United States. It connects the water to the land and the world of human activities through a simple construct: images of water that are near streets named after the water. These streets are everywhere, named for the most important feature of the surrounding landscape: Water Street. By using appropriated satellite imagery as the source, surveillance technology is turned into a contemporary palette of colors and textures, celebrating the distinct nature of our waterways but also revealing the many human impacts threatening its future. Each image is identified by the nearby street name that led to its discovery. A similar project, focused specifically on the area of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, can be found here.
